Aviation has the power to transform lives. It builds confidence, sharpens focus, and opens doors to opportunities many people never knew existed. ChecksAway is my social‑purpose initiative dedicated to making that world more accessible, more inclusive, and more inspiring for the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation enthusiasts.

Why ChecksAway Exists

General aviation in the UK is full of passion, community, and possibility — but for many people, it still feels out of reach. ChecksAway was created to change that.

Its mission is to:

  • Improve accessibility to aviation for people of all backgrounds
  • Showcase the vibrancy and value of UK general aviation
  • Inspire young people — especially girls like my daughter — to see themselves in aviation
  • Champion neurodiverse learners and show how aviation can help them thrive

As a pilot and a parent, I’ve seen first-hand how flying can unlock confidence and capability. My daughter, who is neurodiverse, regularly flies with me. Aviation gives her structure, calm, and a sense of mastery that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Watching her light up in the cockpit has reinforced something vital: aviation isn’t just a hobby, it can be a powerful tool for personal growth.

Aviation and Neurodiversity: A Natural Fit

Many neurodiverse young people excel in environments where:

  • Clear procedures exist
  • Structure and routine are valued
  • Focused, hands-on learning is encouraged
  • Sensory experiences are meaningful rather than overwhelming

Aviation offers all of this. ChecksAway aims to highlight how flying can support neurodiverse individuals by:

  • Providing a safe, structured environment to build confidence
  • Encouraging problem‑solving, spatial awareness, and calm focus
  • Offering a sense of achievement that carries over into everyday life
  • Showing families that aviation can be inclusive, supportive, and empowering

By sharing our own journey, we hope to help other families see aviation as a place where neurodiverse young people can flourish.

ChecksAway is built on the belief that aviation should be open to everyone, not just those who already understand the system. Through outreach, educational content, and community engagement, the initiative works to:

  • Demystify flying and flight training
  • Provide honest, approachable guidance for aspiring pilots
  • Highlight realistic pathways into aviation
  • Break down the perception that aviation is exclusive or intimidating

Whether it’s explaining a navigation chart, sharing the joy of a first flight, or offering practical advice for new students, ChecksAway is here to make aviation feel welcoming.

Showcasing UK General Aviation

The UK’s general aviation community is one of the most passionate and diverse in the world. ChecksAway shines a spotlight on:

  • Local flying clubs and airfields
  • The people who keep GA alive — pilots, engineers, instructors, volunteers
  • The educational and social value of flying
  • The joy, freedom, and community spirit that GA offers

By telling these stories, we help the public understand why general aviation matters — and why it deserves to thrive.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Young people are at the heart of this mission. ChecksAway aims to:

  • Encourage girls and young women to explore aviation
  • Provide relatable role models and real-life examples
  • Create content that sparks curiosity and confidence
  • Support youth organisations and outreach programmes
  • Show families that aviation can be safe, accessible, and life-changing

My daughter’s enthusiasm is a constant reminder of why this matters. When she climbs into the aircraft, she isn’t thinking about barriers — she’s thinking about possibility. ChecksAway exists to give more young people that same spark.

A Future Built on Opportunity

ChecksAway is more than a project, it’s a commitment to shaping a more inclusive future for aviation. By opening doors, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the people who make GA special, we can help the next generation see aviation not as a distant dream, but as a real and achievable path.

If even one young person looks up at the sky and thinks, “I could do that,” then ChecksAway has done its job.
